Wallet 4.0
Dec. 23rd, 2011 01:12 amAnother wallet!!! I've been promising my aunt a wallet for a while, but I just didn't have the time (or the will). I promised that I would have it for her on Christmas, and I finished just in time.

I used the same pattern as before, with the same modification to the zipper. It's so much easier to put together this way. I used a
blue abstract patterned cotton for the main fabric, and navy blue cotton for the lining.

Makeup Bag 2.0
Dec. 23rd, 2011 12:52 amI already made my best friend, Sam, an ipod case for Christmas, but I wanted to give her something else. I decided on a makeup case.

I used a home decor weight print that I've been hoarding, and lined it in a cream cotton. I used a grey zipper since it was all I had, but it seems to work nicely. I love the tip about using the squares to help the zipper sit nicely, it really does make a difference. It was so much easier to insert the zipper, and made the finished product look so polished.

Earring Holder
Dec. 20th, 2011 11:15 pmRecently, I've noticed my mom's earrings have all gravitated to my bathroom's medicine cabinet. I thought that she'd wear them more often if she had them out somewhere where she could see them easily. Thus, this idea was born. I looked up several tutorials on how to make an earring holder, and then went to work.

I picked up a cheap frame from the Christmas Tree Shop, and my dad got the screen from the hardware store. I took the glass and backing off the frame, and cut a rectangle of screen, slightly bigger than the size of the frame. Then I stapled! My dad got me my very own electric staple gun as an early Christmas present, so I had lots of fun! I was going to staple the screen into the lip where the glass went, but it was impossible to get the screen as taught as I needed it. Instead, I stapled it to the very back of the frame, making sure it was tight all around.
I'm really pleased with how this turned out. I was a bit worried about using a staple gun for the first time, but it was actually very easy. I might make a few more of these, maybe with some hooks on the sides for necklaces and bracelets, as well.

Yankees Wallet
Dec. 18th, 2011 10:21 pmWhy do my cousins insist on having me make Yankees things for them?! I will convert them into Mets fans one of these days. Anyway, my youngest cousin, who I made the Power Ranger wallet for 2 years ago, asked for a new wallet with the Yankees logo on it for Christmas.

I used the same velcro wallet pattern as before. The main fabric is a cream color, and the lining is dark, yankee blue. I mixed the fabric paint to get the same blue, and stenciled the logo on the front.
2 down, and 4 (or 5) to go!

Another iPod Case
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:37 pmI finally stopped procrastinating today and started working on presents for Christmas. I decided to start small and make an iPod case for my friend.

She picked out the fabric and it is lined in hot pink. I decided against using elastic as a closure because the button is a bit small. Instead, I used a length of ribbon that I had in my stash for the closure.

No-Sew Cape
Nov. 4th, 2011 07:56 pmI've been following PS I Made This for a while, but today is the first time I've actually made something of hers. I'm pretty sure I'm addicted.

I followed her instructions to make this cute no-sew cape. I used a little less than 2 yards of this fabric that I've had forever. I did make some small changes. Before making the cape, I cut a 3" wide strip down the long side of the fabric for the belt, instead of using the scraps. I also only cut a 2" strip down the middle. I am completely in love with this cape.

Wallet 3.0
Nov. 1st, 2011 05:11 pmI made this wallet for my mom's friend/coworker.

Her only request was that it be green, so I chose this awesome calico print, and paired it with plain black. She really liked it.
I used the same pattern that I used for my mom's wallet. I still hate the zipper, and ended up changing it when I made a wallet for my friend's birthday (unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures).

Jun. 25th, 2011 07:05 pmI'm back!! My mom has been bugging me for a phone case, and I just finished it up today.

I used the same fabric that I used for her wallet, and I used the same pattern that I created for the iPod cases I made for Christmas presents. And, here's a close up of the button, because I think its the cutest!!! (and reminds me of an owl <3)

Basketball Throw
Feb. 23rd, 2011 03:52 pmThis is a belated Christmas gift for my cousin (5 years old). Since I was sick, I didn't get it finished in time for Christmas, and I just found time to finish it.

I used a yard of this basketball fleece that I found at JoAnns. I folded about an inch all the way around, and sewed a zig xag stitch all the way around.

iPod Pouch, part III
Dec. 15th, 2010 10:53 pmYet another iPod pouch done!

I made this one for one of my cousins who LOVES the NY Yankees. So, I bit the bullet and made him a stenciled pouch. I found the logo online, printed it, and used it as the stencil. It took forever to mix the paint and get the perfect 'Yankee blue'. The outside is a cream color, and the inside is the same blue. Instead of elastic and a button, I just put a loop of elastic at the bottom as a closure.
3 down, 9 to go!

iPod Pouch, part II
Dec. 13th, 2010 07:01 pmI used a modified version of a velcro wallet to make this iPod pouch.

My cousin requested a "brown leather" iPod pouch. Since leather is not in my budget, I found this great calico print that looks like distressed leather. Hopefully that will do. This pattern was a bit of a handful, even though it really shouldn't have been. Also, sewing on that button was a nightmare! I think I'll use the previous pattern for the rest of the gifts.

iPod Pouch, part I
Dec. 13th, 2010 02:35 pmI made a new pattern for x-mas presents (iPod pouches), but I wanted to do a trial run first, so I whipped up this little thing.

I've been saving that gorgeous green fabric, so I'm glad this came out ok. I realized halfway through that I didn't have any black elastic, so I had to use some of my salvaged elastic to make the closure. The button came from my great aunt's stash.
Overall, I like how it turned out. I'm not too keen on the exposed seams, but other than that I really like it. Still not sure if I'm going to use this pattern, or modify one that I have for presents.

Panel Apron, part III
Dec. 13th, 2010 11:50 amI got another one of those panel aprons with the intention of making it for one of my friend's birthday. However, I didn't get it finished (or even started, really) because of class. But luck was on my side and I ended up picking this friend for our Secret Santa, so now she'll get her awesome apron.
I'm also giving her a bunch of cupcake/frosting recipes, and a couple boxes of Hello Kitty jellybeans to make up for the lack of birthday gift.
1 down, 11 to go!
Magazine bow
Dec. 12th, 2010 06:53 pmI'm still trying to work up the will to get started on Christmas presents, so I thought I'd start with just making some small things.

I found a link to the tutorial over at
happycraftsmas . These things are so easy and quick to make. I used an old Bonnaroo ad to make it, along with staples and a glue stick. I'm not too sure how well it's going to hold up, but its ridiculously cute. Definitely need to make more of these to put on presents.
This just may have been what I needed to get my ass in gear and start working on gifts. Hopefully I'll have some to post soon.

Candy Corn Nail Art
Oct. 30th, 2010 01:10 amI found a youtube video on how to do candy corn nail art, so I had to try it out and post it.

Sorry for the blurry pic, I'm not the best at taking nail photos. Anyhoo....I used OPI Alpine Snow (white), Sinful Colors Great Wall (orange), and Color Club Almost Famous (yellow). I did this freehand, I didn't realize until after that I could have used my french tip guides. I think it came out pretty awesome. The only down side is that because of all the layering, this took for-freaking-ever to dry (still tacky after over an hour). Now I'm all set for Halloween on Sunday!!

Purple Wallet
Sep. 12th, 2010 03:14 pmI'm still in denial about grad school starting up again so, instead of reading for class, I tried out a new pattern and made a wallet for my mom.

I went over to JoAnns when they were having a sale and bought an obscene amount of fabric quarters (like 20+), so I decided to make a dent in my stash. My mom chose the fabric she wanted, and I went to town. I totally destroyed my interfacing stash making this; I double interfaced both body pieces and the closure, and interfaced most of the pockets. I used velcro as the closure so the wallet would have a bit of give, since I know my mom likes to overstuff her wallets (I also couldn't find the post to put the snaps in...shhh). The wallet came out wicked cute, except for the fact that my seams were (apparently) a bit too big, and the smallest card pockets are a little tight, but its still functional.
Overall, I really liked the pattern. The pockets are much nicer than the other pattern I used before, but the zipper did nothing but piss me off. I couldn't get the fabric to lie flat, I couldn't get the zipper to go in straight. It was a nightmare. Next time I make a wallet, I'll probably go back to the old pattern and use that for the zippered pocket.

Nail Polish Franken
Aug. 7th, 2010 04:13 pmI've become more and more obsessed with nail polish, so it was only a matter of time until I frankened my own.

So, I've kindof fallen in love with Chanel's Paradoxal, but I cannot justify spending that much money on one bottle of nail polish. I found a 'recipe' for a dupe of the polish, and decided to try it out. I could only find Confetti Centerstage at the store, so I used that, OPI Alpine Snow, and 10 Pro Showtime. Thus, Life's a Paradox was born.
Showtime was just a bit too sheer for this, and the purple totally overpowered it, but its still a pretty polish, and I don't have anything like it. It looks more purple than it is in the pics, especially in dimmer light, the color is more muddy and muted. Also, this was completely opaque in one coat, which, to me, is the best thing ever.
All in all, I'm pretty sure I just found a new hobby.

A Very Starkid Album - Various Artists
This one includes music from A Very Potter Sequel, along with covers of songs from AVPM and Little White Lie. I seriously cannot stop listening to this album. I love all the songs, "Stutter" is hilarious and "Those Voices" makes me want to cry. I wasn't going to buy this at first, but I'm glad I did :)

A Very Potter Sequel - Various Artists
This includes the 5 songs from AVPS that were not included on the Starkid album. I am soooo glad that this I was finally able to download these songs. I've been waiting for "Guys Like Potter" and, of course, I've been listening to it constantly since I got this album. I've also taught my 5 year old cousin the entire "Hermione Can't Draw" song, and the first part of "Harry Freakin' Potter"..I feel like my life is complete.

Human - Darren Criss
Seeing a pattern here? I love this EP, its been playing in pretty heavy rotation since I bought it. My faves are "Human" and "Don't You," plus the new versions of "Sami" and "Not Alone." I would love to see him live one day *crosses fingers*

Itunes Live from Soho - Civil Twilight
Wow, something non-Starkid related. I found this on iTunes when my friend and I were searching for their cover of "Teardrop" (which I'm completely obsessed with). I really like listening to live versions of their songs. Steve's voice is so flawless live, its amazing.
So, that's it for now. If you haven't already, go check out AVPM/AVPS on youtube. It won't disappoint.
